March 5 to 11: Groundwater Awareness Week

March 6, 2017 3:07 pm

Where does 98 percent of the planet’s usable fresh water come from?
What is 60 times more plentiful than fresh water found in lakes and streams?

Groundwater is found beneath the water table under the earth’s surface.

Why is groundwater important?
Water beneath the land’s surface is a valuable resource for irrigation, public supply, livestock, industrial use and mining. Therefore, protecting it from contamination and carefully managing its use will ensure that it remains a vital part of our ecosystem.

How can you protect groundwater?
Dispose of chemicals properly.
Don’t dump on the ground or down the drain.
Minimize the use of fertilizer, chemicals and insecticides.
Check your vehicles for fluid leaks.
Keep chemicals and waste safe from rain.
Use deicing salt and pesticides sparingly.
Reduce water consumption.
Have septic systems pumped and inspected every five years.
Examine and maintain on-site wells.

Each of us can do something to maintain the quality and quantity of our water supply. Pay it forward during National Groundwater Awareness Week by encouraging others to join you in protecting one of our most important natural resources.
